Analysis of digital technologies

Over the past 5 weeks I have analysed many e-learning technologies provided and have found that all are interesting, and almost all could be used in a learning environment.Differences in these techniques vary enormously but I feel that with structured techniques in our modern Australian Curriculum ICT tools are the future of education in our classrooms.

The ICT tools I have been investigating for the past few weeks are as below:
Multimedia Tools = Images, Video, Podcast
Presentation Tools = PowerPoint Prezi
Space Tools = Blogs, wikis, Websites
Other Tools = Google Earth
Multimedia Tools is a competent of tools that can either be an image, video or audio. Digital images can be used from an array of uses within the classroom like such as show and tell, spelling journal (student takes the picture and learns how to spell it), writing stories, slide shows and many more. As provided by Fasso (2011) programs for photo editing are great fun whether it is basic editing colours and resizing pictures in Gimp2 or editing and creating fun boarders in Picnik and are perfect tools for children’s creativity. Another digital program that I took an interest with was www.blabberize.com (2010)this is a free website that you upload a digital picture of yourself or a pet, then crop the mouth and record a funny voice. This program uses both image and audio and at the end have a talking image. Ideal tool for teachers to use in the classroom as it is entertaining and humorous and would work with students from primary to secondary school.I created a blabberize photo and it was good for a laugh,Talking fishJ.
The downside of all this technology is that it is very addictive and time consuming. I could not help but try all the tools and got little carried away with the digital/audio tools available. How can you go past the program crazy talk found on the www.reallusion.com website? To start, download the crazy talk program and then upload your personal photos to it and you create this talking/moving3D image of a digital image. I downloaded this program as a free download and played for hours using a picture of my dog. I was able to use my own voice recordings, upload audio clips or use sample ones provided in the program. Unfortunately when it was time for me to get off and save my work I could not as I only had the free sample. The negative use about this program for use in the classroom is it’s not quick and easy as other tools. If it was set up already as a operating learning tool and the teachers just downloaded from the curriculum would be perfect butit is quite complicated, detailed and time wasting and there are easier tools out there that are just as effective. When using multimedia in the classroom it is the teachers responsibility to make students aware of safe and legal practices as stated by Australian Council for Computers in Education (ACCE) 2011 “Demonstrate understanding of safe, legal, and ethical use of digital resources and tools, including cyber safety practices, respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.”

Presentation
Presentation tools are already a commonly used tool but not many people know that PowerPoint can also be used as an interactive learning tool. I certainly didn’t know the whole other world of PowerPoint until I did this activity. Teachers can create an Interactive PowerPoint which allows students to move around the slide entertainingly and freely without making any changes. Such activities include:
·         Games & Puzzles
·         Adventures
·         Story Telling
I created a PowerPoint using the instructions provided by Fasso, (2011) it’s really simple and if you have planned the PowerPoint it this sort of ICT tool would not take too long to create. This is a good skill to have learnt as stated in Moodle (2011) students can create a storyboard for their story and then turn it into a PowerPoint. I will definitely be using this sort of multimedia tool in the classroom. I had a go at Prezi and Glogster and as I discussed in my blog both tools very creative and interesting but I am not sure if at the moment I will be using them? I will give http://prezi.com and www.glogster.com a second chance but I am happy with PowerPoint right now.

Online Spaces
When using online spaces in the classroom it is very important to use strict privacy and safety conditions as stated by DEECD (2011) when using online spaces to not let your students upload a photo of themselves but to use an avatar instead and teachers should stick to sites that they know are educationally safe.
A Blog is an online space tool for sharing ideas, sharing techniques used for teaching, teachers communicating to parents what’s been happening in the classroom and many others. My Blog is created for university to blog about my ICT experiences so it is useful for me to share what I have experienced and what problems got in the way. You can add followers “friends” such as my fellow university friends, they can comment on my blogs and give helpful hints where needed. I am not much of a blogger as I am not really much of a Facebook person either; I don’t really like to comment about what I have done all day. I believe a blog is a useful tool for a teacher as it can be something used to put what’s happening in their classroom for parents to see what their child is doing (with their permission of course). I found a blog called Let the Children Play http://progressiveearlychildhoodeducation.blogspot.com/ this shows wonderful use for what a blog can consist of.

Wiki’s -Not a fan at the moment but I just haven’t had the right hands on experience and I know from alot of web pages I have gone to about children’s learning wikis will be mentioned somewhere. So obviously this is a good learning tool I just don’t get it right now.

Weebly website on the other hand was a good learning tool for me. I feel proud of myself creating a simple little website. I have showed everyone! Creating a simple website like Weebly are good for people that are just getting into uploading pictures, linking other websites together and great for developing patients when it does not work out the first time.  The Weebly I created was for fun learning for kids, all the horrible stuff like maths and English made fun. Basically, it has links to learning games http://karlaseducationsite.weebly.com/. After creating my Weebly I thought that this could be a good tool used in the classroom for student assignments. The students are given a topic to research and then are to use a Weebly website to create a fun way to learn a topic. This could also be used as a collaborative learning tool, students are put into groups to create a website, then each group can visit each others websites to then learn other topics and write a review on it.

There is an array of useful ICT tools that can be useful in the classroom and my last one explored is Google Earth. Google Earth is an incredible tool that enables the students a visual of the entire earth.  Educational stories along with imagination and factual geographic create an incredible learning tool.
CAUTION: When using Google Earth in the classroom for the first time it is most likely going to be more effective if the teacher lets the students search places they know like there house and get all excited and talk about it. I know we all secretly like to see a photo of our blurred out letter box number. Another way to introduce Google Earth in the classroom is to get them to search their homes to begin with but also search places they are familiar with in the area such as the shopping centre, the school the park and many more.
As sited on Google Earth Classroom resources (2011) “Students can use Google Earth to:
  • Explore the animal kingdom and endangered species with the National Geographic layer and other content.Easy
  • Create annotated place markers indicating location of school and points of interest in their town such as the local fire and police stations, the city library, local parks, and museums.Easy
  • Study climate change and the effects of global warming. Average
  • Create tours of their school or community.Average
  • Track earthquakes in real-timeAdvanced”
To conclude we are so lucky that we have these opportunities to use ICT tools in the classrooms and teachers should embrace them. For now we will still have a pen, paper, library and books but should be very appreciative to be a part of this new transition in to 21st century learning as it will one day be history. I strongly believe with that it is the teacher’s responsibility to have a full and essential role in this learning environment with the student and if they keep their students engaged with effective, fun learning tools the students will remember these sorts of things forever. I am only 22 years old but the over head projectors were used when I was in school and it was a very exciting day when the teacher had all the lights off trying to talk seriously about the topic while the whole class did hand puppet shadows when he/she was not looking so imagine the impact modern technology will have on our children’s learning.

Glogster or Blogster

I have just finished creating my Glogster. I got an EDU Glogster I don't know if thats how they come or if theres Glogsters normal and Glogsters edu? I dunno but that's what I got... A glogster is used as a presentation tool but it seems to be very similar to a blog.
Glogster is the same sort of tool as a blog but with more features I guess this is where the presentation side comes in.
With Blogger you create a design for all your post and they will all look the same shape, form and colour but with Glogster when you post a new glog you can create different backgrounds, fonts and text.
On your Blogger you can insert pictures, videos and links but with Glogster you can insert all that + plus more, shapes, pictures, picture text and so on.
I don't really know the depth of Blogger and Glogster but Glogster seems to be more student and teacher friendly. When you are signing up for a new account it gets you to select the school you teach or go to or the university you are studying at.
So if Glogster has all these extra features and is teacher and student friendly why are we using blogger?
Blogger is a bit more user friendly, it has it's simple features for everyone to be able to use with out frustration. Glogsters extra features are good but it can make a glog too busy. Its user firnedly but its   a little bit more confusing then blogger.
I do need to use Glogster more but I think glogster will be good to use in a classroom with your students. If I was a teacher now I think I would use Glogster.

My first glog: http://topsyturvey.edu.glogster.com/first-glog/

http://edu.glogster.com/what-is-glogster-edu/#four  this link shows you features Glogster offers

Fourth Graders using Glogster

This video shows how Glogster can be used for educational use in the classroom. Very cool!

I'm a fan of Glogster in the making...

Prezi

I dont know what it is about prezi but it kinda annoys me. I think its a fun idea the way it jumps all over the page and zooms in and out etc but that I think is also what frustrates me. When I watched the tutorial I was like ok I get it, but then when I created an account and was looking at other peoples prezi's they just seem to go no where. Yes they were giving me all this info in a different way then just reading it down te page but it just didn't draw me in...
I created my own prezi and it's interesting and I do like its functions, tools and all the fun stuff you can do but I don'tknow if I would use it... Maybe I just need a good idea that works well for a prezi.

I might be a late bloomer for the prezi

Interactive PowerPoint

So here I go all keen to learn how to create power point stoy boards and outlines and an interactive PowePoint but wait I have windows 2010 and the instructions in Moodle weren't helping me at all because 2010 was set up different and I couldn't find ANYTHING!. After a lot of huffing and puffing and a few tantrums I finally emailed Jacqui and Angelina for some help, Jacqui told me I needed to change the compatibility mode.
It was that simple, right click on your Word 2010 and go to properties and then compatibilities and save it. As soon as I did that I was on my way :)
Interactive power point is so simple to use. If you are familiar with doing Power Point presentations this will be a breeze. I learnt so many more things about PowerPoint I did not know like hyperlinking, I just thought that was to go to website and didn't realise you could hyperlink all your slides on your PowerPoint so they linked to each page. This is an excellent tool, so handy! After I had made my basic PowerPoint and read on in Moodle that you can create games and puzzles etc. sent my brain on an ideas roller coaster. I have come up with some pretty fun ideas that I want to put on my weebly website... I just need a bit of time to have a play.
This is definitely a tool I will be using in the classroom.

If you haven't tried it give it a go. Brilliant!

21st Century Learning

Thought I posted this in July...Whoops!
Positive
  • 21st century learning has a new way of looking at the world
  • New thinking
  • Children must prepare for fulfilling lives and effective responsible citizenship in a society that is global, high-tech, diverse and information saturated
  • In 21st century the world work requires problem solving, thinking, synthesising, communicating, designing and developing new products
  • We are changing to fit into a world of digital natives
  • Learning must be relevant so each student must see it is important in their lives

Negative
  • DNA of teachers needs to change the way they teach
  • One person was in control, the other person needed it and the teachers are there to deconstruct and recreate it for kids
  • The education system was grounded in the industrial era, when routine work conformity was valued important. So is not going to work for our new world of technology
Interesting
  • If we don’t change we are going to condemned future generations of teachers
  • The skills needed are rapidly changing in our global environment
  • In future years a super-computer will have more processing power than the human brain
  • We will still need our core skills plus 21st century skills
  • The structure must encourage students for new challenges in life, social and work

Blabberize.com

I made this video on blabberize, very funny. First I tried to use a picture of my dog but I couldn't get the mouth right,so I changed my picture.
This is really easy to create and it has simple step by step instructions. Making the mouth is a little bit fiddly but once you get the hang of it it is easy.

"Ok ok you can take my photo but what ever you do DON'T LET THIS GIRL GIVE ME KISSES"

Picnik - Photo Editor

Picnik is an online photo editor. You can either create an account or just upload a photo, edit and save to your computer. That's what I did, I have too many accounts now to go and create another one. Have a look at http://www.picnik.com/app#/home/welcome it is basic and easy to use.

Back to the 80's

Gimp 2 Free Photo Editor

WARNING! If you download this Gimp 2 you will be on here for hours playing with all the tools.

Below are a few of the same photo's I had a muck around with. All photo's were saved to a reduced size, make sure you "save as" your photos so you don't overwrite the original.

This is the original picture I took in Airlie Beach. The colours in this picture are already very pretty so it was fun playing with all the different effects and colours using this picture.
This image I used the Colour Balance tool
This image I used the Colourize tool
This image I used the Curves tool
This image I used the Curves tool again
This image I used the Reducing Colour tool
This image I the used Threshold tool

Using the GIMP 2 I was able to change the colours and use different effects and shrink the size of the photo as well. I uploaded all 7 pictures at the same time and it took them less then 30 seconds to download to my blogger. Very handy when you need to load heaps of pictures to the internet or store them on your USB.

Weebly Websites

I don't know about anyone else but making my weebly website has been fun! It was tricky deciding on a topic to create a webpage about but once I wrote down my key ideas and listed a few things I wanted featured in the site the mission begun. My website is based around fun learning games so it’s really tough having to play all different sorts of games J really takes it out of me…
The only problem I am having with weebly is the design, I don't know if it's because it’s a free web making site or I just can't figure it out but each page you have is the same design... I thought every new page would be able to create a new design and theme but I don't believe this is the case. Sadly I had to change my beautiful home page so it suited each page in my website. So if ANYONE knows how to make each page a different design please let me know because it is annoying not being able to get creative.
***BEWARE*** I found if you have uploaded a photo to your page design and then go and change your font, size, colour and theme font your picture will get removed. You then just have to add your picture back in, can be quite annoying and time consuming so if you do font first than picture you will be fine. I love a bit of trial and error.

Snipping Tool

Since I was shown the snipping tool in e-learning I have used it every chance I could. The snipping tool is an upgraded version of the screen print function.
I used the snipping tool for games I added to my weebly website. I found a website with a game I wanted to put onto my website so I got the snipping tool took a capture of the game, saved the capture/picture and then added the picture to my weebly website. Once I added the picture I linked the picture to the website the game came from so when you click the picture of the game you want to play it will open it in another window.
If you haven't played with the snipping tool yet (found in your start menu, programs and accessories) I would suggest giving it a go. Love it!
